1) The government has appointed Venkatraman Anantha Nageswaran as its chief economic advisor (CEA) days before the tabling of the 2021-22 Economic Survey (on January 31) and the presentation of the 2022-23 Union Budget (on February 1).

2) On February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union budget for the year 2022-23.

➨During the first two days of the 8th session of the 17th Lok Sabha, there will be no 'Zero Hour' on January 31 and February 1, 2022."

3) With the view to curbing criminal activities along the India-Bangladesh border, Indian border guarding force BSF has introduced "Anti Cut-Anti Climb" fencing.

➨ Anti-cut fencing has a long life, is stronger and economically better and no one can cut this fence or climb it easily.

4) Renowned Marathi author and social activist Anil Awachat has passed away. Awachat was the founder of a de-addiction center called Muktangan Rehabilitation Center in Pune in 1986. 

➨He was known for his several Marathi books like “Manasa”, Swatahavishayi, “Gard”, “Karyarat”, “Karyamagna” and “Kutuhalapoti”.

5) INS Khukri (P49), the first indigenously built missile corvette of the Indian Navy, was handed over to the Daman and Diu Administration.

➨ The decommissioned Khukri is planned to be converted into a museum by the Diu Administration for public visits.

6) The President of India has approved the conferment of Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards - 2021 on 51 persons which includes Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 06, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 16 and Jeevan Raksha Padak to 29 persons. Five awardees are  posthumous.

7) Martyrs' Day, also known as Shaheed Diwas, is observed across the country on 30 January every year. The day marks the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

➨On this day, Indians remember the slain freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the country's independence. Various events are organised across the country to pay respect to the fallen.

8) President Ram Nath Kovind has awarded President's Tatrakshak Medal (PTM) and Tatrakshak Medal (TM) to the Indian Coast Guard Personnel for their act of "conspicuous gallantry, exceptional devotion to duty and distinguished or meritorious service" on the occasion of the Republic Day.

9) Senior pacer Mitchell Starc claimed his maiden Allan Border medal while Ashleigh Gardner became the first indigenous person to win the Belinda Clarke award, the top two honours at Cricket Australia (CA) Awards. Starc was honoured for his strong performance in all three formats of the game.

10) Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra has been bestowed the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in this year's list of defence decorations, which include gallantry medals for soldiers and police forces involved in counterterror operations in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast.

11) Pushp Kumar Joshi has been picked by government headhunter PESB to be the new chairman and managing director of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL), the nation's third largest oil refining and fuel marketing company.

12) Ashleigh Barty became the first home Australian Open champion since 1978 after beating grand slam final debutante Danielle Collins 6-3 7-6 in final.

➨ The world No. 1 was utterly dominant throughout the tournament and clinched a historic title without even dropping a set.

13) Captain of India's 1964 Tokyo Olympics gold medal-winning hockey team, Charanjit Singh passed away.

➨Charanjit was also part of the 1960 Games silver-winning and 1962 Asian Games silver-winning team. The two-time Olympian was a part of India’s glorious days.

14) India's largest electric vehicle (EV) charging station with a capacity of 100 charging points for 4 wheelers, was opened at Delhi-Jaipur National Highway in Gurugram.

➨Previously, India's largest EV charging station was situated in Navi Mumbai with 16 AC & 4 DC charging ports for EVs.

15) France's Kristina Mladenovic and Croatia's Ivan Dodig were crowned the first champions of the 2022 Australian Open, beating Aussies Jaimee Fourlis and Jason Kubler in the mixed doubles final.

16) Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced that a military school named after Sangolli Rayanna is going to be set-up by the state government at a cost of Rs 180 crore.
